Seido Wellington offers a karate programme for children aged 7 and over. It is the ideal environment for your child to learn martial arts – it’s welcoming, encouraging and fun. All classes are designed specfically for children, and several are run by a black belt who is also a trained teacher.

The children’s programme co-ordinator is Sensei Julie Herron, a trained teacher and 4th degree black belt. All inquiries about the programme should be directed to Sensei Julie (

Children new to karate start in the white belt class.  All children’s classes are grouped by karate level so your child learns alongside a similar level of ability. We welcome and encourage parents to be present at all children’s classes.

There is an emphasis on physical fitness – and this helps your child’s stamina, coordination, endurance, balance, muscle control and flexibility. The Seido Karate principles of love, respect and obedience will also help your child – self-respect, self-discipline, awareness, politeness, tolerance are all enhanced.

Our children’s programme will gradually take your child through the karate grades, every six months or so if your child is ready to progress to the next level. The teacher will invite your child to grade when he or she considers your child is ready. Between promotions, mini ‘tests’ in the form of ‘stripe testing’ will gauge your child’s progress.

Children at green belt and above

It normally takes three or four years to progress from beginner grade to green belt in Seido Karate. Progression from green belt level to brown belt level may take 18 months to two years of solid training; progression from brown belt to black tip and then black belt may take about three years of solid training.

Once your child has reached green belt, he or she will begin light contact sparring, using protective gear. This sparring initially takes place within the children’s classes but you should move your child into the adult sparring as soon as practicable.

We recommend you slowly transition your child into the adult classes from green belt. The adults green and brown belt classes  provide a new opportunity for your child to learn,  and will help develop their karate skills in a more challenging setting. You will know when your child is ready to move to the adult karate environment, but do talk it over with the relevant teacher.

Children in other classes

Children may attend some of the classes for adults. These classes include the Saturday kata class (9 – 10 am). Ideally, your child should train with us for a few months before attending these classes. If in doubt, please ask the class instructor if the class is suitable for your child.

The fitness classes and adults beginners classes are not suitable for children.

Membership fees for children  are $150 per term. There are reduced fees if you are a family of three or more training.
